Before I became lactose intolerant a few years ago, I purchased and devoured so many Millionaires Shortbreads that Chris Tarrant once called me up to congratulate me. However, I soon had to go into early retirement after a tragic incident with a Frijj milkshake in 2010.
Fast-forward a few years and Becky stands before me, offering me a box of Millionaires Shortbread from the eclectic Free From Range at Morrisons. “Yeah, right!” I said, rudely objecting in the face of her selfless generosity. “I’ve tried every free from Millionaires Shortbread on Earth and nothing compares to the real deal.” I began to inexplicably hum the tune to Dickonson’s Real Deal.
As Becky withheld the urge to retaliate with warranted physical violence, I accepted the box just to prove how correct I would be and scurried back to my lair. Of course, there’s an elaborate tear-jerking back-story to my bitter cynicism on the topic of these specific baked goods. Having been deceived by a certain brand’s lacklustre free from Millionaires Shortbread in the past, such a trauma has left me cold and resentful. Yet when all hope was lost, I was totally blown away by how true to the real McCoy Morrisons’ shortbreads are.
The shortbread is made from rice flour, oat flour and has a lovely, subtle coconut flavour which only further adds to the rich, indulgent experience. The caramel layer has a gooey toffee quality to it whilst the chocolate on top adds an authentic (and literal) snap to the whole equation. Eating is believing.
In short, this is free from done right. We don’t want a ‘close enough’ or ‘that’ll do’ version of our favourites, all we ask for is a version that does the genuine article justice. In this case ladies and gentlemen, it was well worth the wait.
