Gluten Free, Gluten Free, Gluten Free Brighton! Glutenwise is a lovely Gluten Free Market Stall every Saturday at the Brighton Open Market.
I’ve got to say that I am a pretty unlucky and lucky girl at the same time. Last week (16th-18th May 2013) was The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. It’s one of the biggest new music festivals in Europe and I absolutely love going. Myself and Mark are fortunate enough to get the opportunity to go as press due to my other blogging love… music, it is definitely one of my favourite weekends of the year. Unfortunately however this year I had to withdraw and resist the temptation to go as I am in the middle of my final year University exams. This is the unlucky part!
The lucky part however is that Mark got to go and have a great time down there by himself! NOT ONLY that however, he came back from Brighton with some delicious gluten free gifts for me! If you have been reading this blog from the start you will definitely know my absolute love for Brighton and its vast array of gluten free products on offer!
A favourite gluten free spot that I have spoken about before on the blog is a little gluten free market stall called Glutenwise based at the Saturday Brighton Open Market. I will link my original post about it here, as I talk about it in much greater detail there and this is only a quickie cake update of what Glutenwise had to offer this time!
So basically Mark knows my love for this market stall and managed to transport me two slices of different cakes home on his long train journey back. I am not quite sure how he managed the trip home without either eating them himself or crushing them!
The first slice of cake I was given was a gluten free lemon and rhubarb sponge cake with lemon icing. As you can see it didn’t come home absolutely perfectly but almost there! But what was perfect about it was the taste! The icing was bursting with a lemony flavour which complimented the rhubarb within the cake flawlessly. I cannot fault this cake on any level it was simply one of the nicest things I have ever eaten! I might have not chosen a cake with rhubarb in it if I had picked it myself, but I definitely will from now on! It just tasted so fresh and moist. I permitted my mum a small mouthful and her response was much the same as mine! She said she definitely could not taste the difference between that cake and a slice of gluten filled cake, neither could she feel any difference in texture. It was just epic!
I really feel a lemon and rhubarb cake could do really well in any coffee/cake shop this time of year. It just seems to make sense. It oozes summer is its look and flavour. So if you can get down to the Glutenwise stall at the Saturday Brighton Open Market, grab a slice or if it’s not available that day… make a cheeky request that it gets baked again!
In the mean time whilst I’m not in Brighton… I plan on baking my own lemon and rhubarb cake!
The second slice of cake I was presented with is actually more a bread! A slice of gluten free chocolate chip, walnut and banana bread to be exact! Oh my goodness, it was just as good as the previous cake. Like many banana breads it was fairly dense in texture but far from being too heavy. I have never tried banana bread with chocolate in it before, but it really worked. It wasn’t overpowering but it was just enough to make it different from your standard banana bread. The large chunks of walnuts were an epic bonus as well! This slice was not shared with anyone else, I couldn’t part with it if I’m honest and I really could do with another slice ASAP!
Yet again, sadly I will not be heading down to Brighton any time in the near future so it’s unlikely that I will be able to get any more from Glutenwise, but it’s given me some inspiration for the kitchen. I have regularly made plain banana bread in the past but it’s time to experiment now! If anything Glutenwise doesn’t just provide my taste buds with the greatest party of the year but they also provide me with much baking inspiration. After my exams are over, the chef’s hat will firmly be placed upon my head!
So basically this post is another massive thank you to Glutenwise for providing me with some much needed cake through the exam period! I urge you to pop down next time you’re in Brighton! Oh and I guess thanks to Mark for being thoughtful and buying the cakes for me!
