I created this post in 2013… since then I have a brand new Gluten Free Brighton Guide created in 2015! You should really check it out after reading this post… click here to view it.
So myself and Mark spent last weekend in Brighton. Brighton is a place I know really well having lived here for a year of my university life back in 2010/2011; we really don’t get the chance to come back here enough.
Brighton really excites me as a place, it’s by the sea for one thing, it feels very independent and quirky compared to my home town and its food scene is second to none. We weren’t expecting great weather with there being snow on the ground the week before but somehow the weather was actually perfect for us; chilly but very sunny, and oh it made such a difference!
We stayed in a small bed and breakfast over in Kemp Town, an area I was very unfamiliar with in Brighton, but it was great. Our B&B was really lovely, our room was nicely decorated with the comfiest king size bed ever! Our hosts were really friendly too and made us feel really welcome. They made amazing full English breakfasts each morning; these could also be made both veggie and vegan on request. Having read reviews I have seen that they are very accommodating with other food issues such as wanting a gluten free breakfast; however I find with my IBS stomach the most I can take in the morning is a bowl of cereal, so unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to try anything beyond Rice Krispies! But if you are looking for a place to stay in Brighton I would highly recommend Bannings at Number 14 – we’ll be back!
So yeah as I said Brighton’s food scene is second to none in my opinion. There are all the standard chain restaurants in ample supply as well as the standard coffee shops we see everywhere across the world; but what makes it that bit better than the rest is its mass of successful independent cafes, restaurants and food shops. I noticed this more than ever this time round in Brighton as for once we were having four days of pure relaxation without any plans.
The lanes in Brighton are bombarded with small cafes with signs outside them stating they serve gluten free food. It is incredibly mind blowing for a gluten intolerant person to see that there are so many places serving gluten free food and as such, incredibly frustrating to only be there for four days… there is no chance we could get round more than a handful of these places… unless we were planning on eating for ten people and aiming to go up a dress size or three. Instead we made a mind note and started debating whether we could get enough money together to just move to Brighton tomorrow.
I can only apologise that I did not note down all the places I saw with gluten free signs in the windows, there were just too many. But, I guarantee if you go down to Brighton any time soon you only have to look about and ask some of the friendly folk behind the counter and they will be more than happy to help you out. Along with Brighton being a great place for us gluten intolerants, it’s also perfect for veggies, vegans, any other food intolerance people, and generally anybody who likes food!
So yeah, there you have it I have proclaimed my true love for Brighton in terms of its amazing gluten free food scene. I’d highly recommend popping down to Brighton if you haven’t been before. It’s one of the few places that I’ve found in England which really makes you feel like you’re on holiday, and with good food to go with it, what could be better!
If you have been to Brighton before or end up going sometime in the future and find any other great gluten free places to eat I would love if you could let me know! Please feel free to comment below or head over to my Twitter or Facebook and divulge your discoveries!
