Gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries recipe with a Nutella filling – they only ask for 5 ingredients and take just 30 minutes to make! And yes, you can cook them in the air fryer too.
Gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries recipe – these super light and flaky puff pastries are packed with Nutella, only need 5 ingredients and take just 30 minutes to make. Super easy to make dairy-free or vegan too (see the FAQ section). With a spooky mummy decoration that’s super easy to achieve, people will wonder why you’re still making these long after the Halloween season has ended!
How sad is this? This is the last Halloween recipe I’ll be posting of 2023. Though there’s only a few days left to get yourself in gear if you want to make these, I’ve fortunately left the easiest until last. It won’t take you long to get all the ingredients you need and it’ll probably take even less time to make this!
So far this year in terms of spooky baking we’ve had Halloween mummy brownies, shortbread witches’ fingers, Monster cupcakes, my gooey green slime tart and now these beauties!
I really hope you’ve enjoyed the Halloween recipes this year, which have all aimed to sport a super cute, not-so-scary decoration that absolutely anyone of any age can achieve with ease. And not surprisingly, this final recipe is no different.
And if there’s one thing I think you’ll all agree we’ve learned from my Halloween recipes this year, it’s that edible eyes make anything look spooky and/or hilarious ? Oh and for those who have asked, the Halloween garland in the photos for all my Halloween recipes is from M&S!
Here’s the 5 ingredients you’ll need to whip them up in no time…
Gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries recipe: What you’ll need…
- Gluten-free puff pastry: I used gluten-free Jus-Rol pastry for this recipe which you can find in chilled free from sections in Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsburys. One sheet makes 3 medium-sized pastries so bear that in mind when you’re buying it if you fancy making more!
- Nutella: Yep, it’s gluten-free here in the UK! Dairy-free alternatives work perfectly too and if you’re nut-free, a simple nut-free chocolate spread is perfect.
- Egg: This is just for egg wash, so small, medium or large eggs work fine here.
- Edible eyes: Fortunately, you can find these in supermarkets and they’re usually gluten-free – just ensure you check the ingredients first! I used these from Tesco but see the FAQ section below for links to other supermarkets too.
- Icing sugar (optional): This is just for a finishing touch, so I’ve listed this as optional. Just sift it on at the very end before serving.
So here’s the fun part for me: describing what my gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries taste like!
Whilst you won’t get the same, explosive puff you might remember getting with gluten-containing puff pastry, the gluten-free puff pastry I buy isn’t half bad! Though it may not inflate as much, it’s still light, crisp on the outside and flaky in the middle. And given just how long it’d take to make puff pastry from scratch, I will most definitely take what I can get here!
Underneath that golden pastry lies lashing of Nutella, adding that unmistakable big, bold chocolate hazelnut flavour and sweetness.
Given that JusRol pastry isn’t made with butter, meaning it doesn’t exactly have much flavour at all (though that does make it dairy-free and vegan!), the Nutella is the star of the show here when it comes to flavour. The texture of the pastry combined with warm, gooey Nutella is such an underrated pleasure (especially when you’re gluten-free), so make sure you give these a try before Halloween passes!
The little icing sugar on top is mainly just for presentational purposes (which is why it’s optional) but it does add a little extra welcome sweetness to the pastry too.
Here’s answers to all the questions you might have about this recipe before we start…
Gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries recipe: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this recipe gluten-free? Is it suitable for Coeliacs?
It is gluten-free, though nobody would know just by tasting it – trust me!
Bear in mind that minimising cross-contamination is hugely important if you’re Coeliac or making this for someone who is. Here’s some tips from Coeliac UK on minimising the risk of cross contamination.
Also, make sure that all ingredients used don’t have any gluten-containing ingredients. Then make sure that they also don’t have a ‘may contain’ warning for gluten, wheat, rye, barley, oats (which aren’t gf), spelt and khorasan wheat (aka Kamut).
Here’s some more info from Coeliac UK on identifying safe gluten-free products.
How do I make this recipe dairy-free?
Easily! Simply use Nature’s Store’s chocolate hazelnut spread instead of Nutella – you’ll easily find this in supermarket free from aisles.
Can I make your gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries recipe vegan?
Yep! If you follow the instructions above to make this recipe dairy free, then all you’ve got left to contend with is the egg.
Instead, use 3 tbsp of dairy-free milk mixed with 1.5 tsp of maple syrup and brush on as ‘egg wash’. Simple!
Is this recipe low FODMAP?
This recipe uses two products (Jus-Rol gluten-free puff pastry and Nutella) which have not been tested for FODMAPs as far as I know. Nutella most definitely isn’t low FODMAP, but the dairy-free alternative by Nature’s Store most likely is at a 1 tbsp serving per person.
However, as these products haven’t been tested, I’d recommend waiting until the reintroduction phase of the diet to make this.
Where can I buy gluten-free Jus-Rol puff pastry?
You can buy it in Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsburys in the chilled free from sections.
Where did you find the edible eyes? Are they gluten-free?
Yes, they’re gluten-free! And I found them in Tesco. They also sell them in Asda and Sainsburys too, but if buying elsewhere please ensure you check the ingredients first to ensure they’re gluten-free.
And yes, all these food colourings mentioned are gluten-free!
Can I freeze your gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries?
Yes! Once cooled, store in an air-tight container and freeze for 2-3 months.
To defrost, leave out at room temperature, then bake in the oven until the crispy texture of the pastry comes back. I can’t guarantee the edible eyes will stay looking like eyes, however!
Gluten-free Halloween mummy puff pastries recipe: Tips for perfection!
- Don’t go crazy when spreading the Nutella – a little goes a long way and too much can make the pastry saturated and if it oozes out too much, it’ll burn.
- Preheat your oven and wait for it! Puff pastry puffs more when plunged straight into a hot oven.
- Egg wash matters! That beautiful golden brown hue on the pastry comes from the egg wash so don’t expect it without it. It’ll be very pale without!
- Don’t overbake. The gluten-free JusRol pastry can get rather crunchy and tough if overdone instead of being light and flaky. So be sure to check them a few minutes before they’re done to ensure they’re not getting too dark or blackened at the edges.
- Enjoy warm. This is best enjoyed warm while the pastry is lovely and flaky and the Nutella is a little gooey. After 5 minutes resting (nobody likes burnt fingers!) it’s ready to serve.
Gluten-free Halloween Mummy Puff Pastries Recipe
Ingredients
- 280 g pack of gluten-free puff pastry I used JusRol – linked in FAQ section
- 3 tbsp chocolate hazelnut spread
- 1 egg beaten
- 6 edible eyes linked in FAQ section
- 3 tbsp icing sugar optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180C/200C fan. Prepare a baking tray by lining it with non-stick baking paper.
- Cut the pastry into either six or eight equal pieces (six will make three medium-sized mummy pastries, eight will make four smaller pastries).
- Spread a good tablespoon of chocolate spread on half of the pieces, leaving a 1cm gap around the edge.
- Cut the other halves of the pastry pieces into 0.5cm strips – this will form the mummy wrapping design on top.
- Brush egg wash around the edge of the pastry with chocolate spread on it, then place the strips of pastry on top as shown in the pictures – press the pastry down at the edges so it doesn’t detach in the oven. Make sure there are gaps so you can see the chocolate spread and also ensure you leave enough space for adding for the eyes after baking.
- Brush egg wash on top of the pastry strips and place into the oven on the prepared baking tray for about 20 minutes or until golden.
- Remove from the oven, add the edible eyes and optionally dust with a little icing sugar. Enjoy warm or cold.
To cook in an air fryer
- Heat or preheat the air fryer to 200C.
- Place into the air fryer and air fry for 8-10 minutes or until the pastry on top is golden and crisp.
