Introducing a delicious gluten free breakfast sandwich! Earlier this year whilst Mark and myself were walking around The Allergy and Free From Show in London we found many new products and brands that we haven’t been able to get enough of.
One of these products came from the wonderful Amy’s Kitchen. Amy’s Kitchen is a brand I have been fond of for numerous years now; from their Gluten Free Broccoli and Cheddar Bake to their Chunky Tomato Soup. Amy’s products always delight my taste buds, but this gluten free breakfast sandwich is divine!
So when we wandered over and saw the Amy’s Ambassadors giving out samples of their, yet to be released, gluten free Breakfast Sandwich we couldn’t resist! It excited our brains, our noses and our taste buds; they’re now currently available in the gluten free freezer section at Tescos for £2.50!
Well it is now September and at this weekend Mark and myself visited a large Tesco Store to find the tasty Amy’s Breakfast Sandwich staring at us lovingly from the freezer cabinet. We picked up a couple and today decided to try them out for our lunch.
The gluten free Breakfast Sandwich is also Dairy Free and Vegan. You could call it a tastier Sausage & Egg McMuffin with a twist! The ‘muffin’ is a Gluten Free Bun, the ‘sausage’ is a veggie patty that is of course gluten and dairy free too. The ‘egg’ is certainly not egg, instead it is golden scrambled tofu (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!!), & this is all finished off with a tomato-based sauce.
It comes frozen and you cook it from frozen too. It can be cooked in both the oven and the microwave. We cooked ours in the microwave because, as you might know, we currently do not have an oven! However, the microwave is much quicker and definitely a perfect alternative.
The gluten free breakfast sandwich comes premade in a plastic wrapping within a small cardboard box. Both Mark and myself must admit to being fairly underwhelmed at the size of the sandwich when we got it out of the box… we are used to eating lunches a lot bigger than this, but we held back judgement, and remained excited!
When cooking the sandwich in the microwave the instructions state that you keep it in the plastic packaging initially, microwaving on half power for 2 minutes 30.
Once this is done remove the sandwich and make a small slit in the plastic and turn it over. Microwave upside down for a further 1 minute 20 before leaving to stand for a further minute. It is then gluten free Breakfast Sandwich Time, simple!
I was really hungry and hoped that the gluten free breakfast sandwich would fill me up enough for lunch. It certainly did (with a bag of crisps on the side!) Don’t be deterred by the smallish size of the sandwich it was actually quite filling and extremely tasty.
The gluten free bun was nice and soft and went incredibly well with the filling. The vegetarian sausage was seasoned really well and the scrambled tofu I must admit was really tasty. I have never had scrambled tofu before, and rarely eat tofu as I am most definitely a meat eater, but I was very impressed with it on this occasion. The texture and look was near identical to scrambled egg and I doubt many people would even realise the difference. As a whole, with the Amy’s ‘secret sauce’, the combination of fillings was perfect. I really, really enjoyed my lunch!
I have to admit this is not my usual choice of food. I have rarely eaten a ready meal in my life, and certainly never eaten a premade frozen sandwich (or an Egg McMuffin actually), but this Dairy Free, Vegan and gluten free Breakfast Sandwich from Amy’s Kitchen was off the chain in terms of taste.
We both enjoyed it so much that we definitely wouldn’t have minded it being a little larger in size; if this were ever possible in the future, I would recommend Amy’s trying to achieve this. I would love for the gluten free Breakfast Sandwich to do well as it deserves to and I want to eat it again and again. On looks alone I’m not sure on how well it would do, but fortunately food is there to be tasted and the taste sells itself!
Where can I buy Amy’s Kitchen Gluten Free Breakfast Sandwich?
Pick up the Breakfast Sandwich from Amy’s Kitchen in your local Tesco’s Free From Freezer Section. It is currently on sale for £2.50. I highly recommend you giving them a try… for lunch like me, or maybe for Breakfast seeing as they are a ‘Breakfast Sandwich’! Let me know what you think when you give this tasty gluten free, dairy free, vegan delight a try. It is certainly a nice feeling to be able to indulge in something that us intolerants so often just have to ignore. Can’t wait for my next sarnie from Amy’s!
