What do you do when you fancy a Gluten Free Pork Pie? Well, Marks & Spencer now do Gluten Free Pork Pies… so go there! I thought I would test them out for you! (How kind of me!!)
Marks & Spencer in my opinion have always been at the forefront of the drive for better gluten free products in the supermarkets. They are a great retailer to go to if you are looking for gluten free BBQ food; burgers & sausages everywhere clearly state gluten free. They are also amazing at Christmas time with a wide range of gluten free treats to feast your eyes on. Another area that they are leading the way on compared to the other supermarket own brand ranges is when it comes to what I call ‘picnic food’.
The gluten free quiches & gluten free scotch eggs have been around for a few years now & are a favourite with many. I especially enjoy the scotch eggs when I can get my hands on them! The introduction of gluten free pork pies by M&S recently was definitely music to my ears. You might remember that not long ago I posted all about the amazing Gluten Free Pork Pies from Voakes. Personally, I don’t think the Voakes Gluten Free Pork Pies can be beaten on taste (though I’m happy to be proved wrong!), but the convenience of being able to get Gluten Free Pork Pies from M&S is amazing news.
M&S Gluten Free Pork Pies come in a pack of four. They are all mini sized, which is perfect in my opinion. The bigger the pork pie, the greater slice/amount I will probably consume, & to be honest, pork pie isn’t an ‘everyday’ type of food!
The pies have a delicious, rich pastry surrounding the pork. Another bonus is that M&S Gluten Free Pork Pies are not only gluten free, they are also dairy free too. You wouldn’t have thought so by the flavour & texture of the delicious pastry, but they are! Whilst the pork pie’s pastry texture and flavour is perfect for me, I would maybe have preferred the pies to be a slightly more golden colour than they were. They were a little too pale for my liking… though that is just being really fussy!
The meat within the gluten free pork pies was tender and well seasoned. The meat was surrounded by a minor layer of jelly. I am always glad when the layer isn’t too large as I’ve never been that much of a fan, but it does keep the pie from drying out quicker.
I really enjoyed a couple of these little beauties with my lunch, dipped into my favourite chutney, Mrs Balls Chutney! (a traditional South African Chutney… seeing as I am half South African!) M&S Gluten Free Pork Pies would go well with whatever you fancy & would be the perfect addition to any picnic. I would highly recommend giving them a go.
Have you had the chance to try the M&S Gluten Free Pork Pies yet? If you haven’t been able to find them in your local yet, keep trying, they seem to sell out very quickly. Marks & Spencer PLEASE produce more gluten free pork pies!! Also let me know if there is any other traditional english foods that you miss, maybe we can push the likes of M&S to create some more gluten free favourites!
