Yet another amazing establishment fighting the great free from battle is The Free From Bakehouse, formerly known as Sugargrain. Though you can buy many of their products online here, if you’re lucky enough to be a resident of London you can head down to Borough Market, Brockley Market or the London Farmers’ Market Broadgate and purchase them in person! If you’re a gluten-free tourist in London, make this an important stop on your itinerary; there aren’t many opportunities across the globe like this one! If you aren’t around on market day however you can also pop down to a Whole Foods Market where plenty of goodies are stocked!
I picked up one of their chocolate brownies among many other things from their stand at The Allergy Show and just couldn’t resist sharing my thoughts with you guys. As you’ll know if you’re a regular Gluten Free Cuppa Tea reader, I have tried almost every gluten and dairy-free brownie in existence. It’s a tough job, but I do it for you guys (or at least, that’s what I tell myself). However, the reason I’ve had so many is because no two are ever the same and Sugargrain’s brownie is certainly yet another welcome variation within the world of brownies.
It has a chewy texture which I’ve found most gluten-free brownies can often lack and the unmistakable crunch of those cacao nibs; the combination of these two opposing textures is sublime! It has to be the most chocolatey brownie I’ve had the pleasure of tasting and the nibs add a really nice chocolate chip feel without the dairy that usually comes with it. I had it with some dairy-free vanilla ice cream which rounded it off nicely as the dessert of kings.
Overall, a very strong contender in the gluten and dairy-free brownie market. Get down to London, grab a brownie and chat to the friendly folks at The Free From Bakehouse! You won’t be disappointed.
