So I have been excited about Bfree wraps for bloomin ages. It has been a long time since I first heard about them… maybe the very beginning of this year. Before this I had attempted to make my own wraps on numerous occasions; sometimes these attempts went ridiculously wrong and other times the wraps tasted good but were incredibly greasy, in the end I just gave up trying.
I am aware of course that Warburtons have had their white & seeded wraps out there for quite a long time now, however the high calories in them have been a massive turn off for me. I have always found it incredibly frustrating that gluten free alternatives to bread based products are always higher in fat and greater in calories compared to their
gluten filled counterparts; so Bfree have brought a breath of fresh air to my kitchen cupboards!
To me, bread/wraps/rolls/baguettes etc are just a facilitator to my filling. They make me look normal when eating lunch and hold my meal together. The last thing I want from a couple of slices of bread is a huge load of fattiness, especially when you can guarantee it doesn’t taste as nice as a regular freshly baked warm baguette from the local bakers.
Because of my stubbornness towards the fatty, crumbly gluten free bread based products that are available in the supermarkets I have often made lunchtimes incredibly difficult and quite a chore. I don’t always fancy a jacket potato and because of my IBS I am unable to eat salads on a regular basis as well. It is only on the rare occasion when I am out at a nice café or sushi bar that I can indulge in what looks like a normal lunch for a normal human being.
However within the last month this has suddenly changed, I feel normal at home, I feel normal when I’m out; I have found the tastiest gluten free facilitator to my filling! Not only is this facilitator actually tasty it is low calorie and low fat just like regular filling facilitators! The Bfree wrap has blown my mind.
Back at the Allergy and Free From Show in June I dashed straight to the Bfree stand and was lucky enough to sample one of the wraps warmed with a delicious filling of mango, avocado, salsa and a tangy sauce. Of course I immediately raised my hand to the folks behind the stand and proudly declared that I required many more wraps for when I got home. Sadly Bfree had already sold out at the show and I was left lost and pretty gutted inside. Fortunately 22nd July came around much faster than I thought it would and Bfree have bounced onto the shelves at Asda! I have already bought and devoured many packets of the wraps and plan on buying many more in the coming weeks.
So enough rambling about the life and lunchtimes of a gluten free girl, lets hit the product itself! Bfree wraps are currently sold in the UK in most Asda stores, I hear that they are also sold on Ocado.com, but I have yet to purchase any via this method. They are £2.80 for 6 wraps, which I think, is actually an absolute bargain for gluten free. I know that many people complain about the cost of gluten free products in comparison to regular products but to be fair it is just something we have to deal with and as long as it tastes good and it doesn’t give me horrendous stomach pains I think gluten free products are worth every penny. It’s no good complaining and refusing to buy pricey gluten free products, they simply will be discontinued if enough people do this and then we’re stuck with nothing! 47p per wrap isn’t half bad when you think about it.
The wraps themselves are nice and thin and really flexible, they don’t break when you wrap them, which is a massive plus. It is recommended that you put them in the microwave for 15 seconds or on a hot grill pan briefly. Having tried both these options and also trying them without doing anything I have to say I enjoy them all different ways. If you are on the go they taste great without any microwaving or grilling. I just took one out with me this afternoon to a café where I bought a salad bar bowl containing some sweet chilli sauce, chicken, boiled egg etc and filled up a Bfree wrap, it tasted delicious.
They also do of course taste great when you have warmed them ever so slightly in the microwave. Last Wednesday I did this when I had the Bfree wraps as part of my
delicious chicken fajita dinner! Wraps really are so useful and strangely feel quite a novelty for me. When I was at school nobody really ate wraps, it was just good old sarnies or a crusty roll. By the time I felt wraps were getting popular, it was already a little too late for me to start to eat them, the gluten issues had sadly set in!
Another massive plus point for the Bfree wraps comes in their nutritional value, especially in terms of their fat content and calories. A Bfree wrap contains 99 calories and less than a gram of fat per wrap. Now that sounds more like what I expect from a gluten filled wrap if I’m honest. As a result of the low fat and calorie content I really do question why so many gluten free bread based products seem to require the high dosages of fat within them. Surely this is not necessary. Half the time it seems like they have higher contents of fat to help them last longer. This in some ways makes sense as if you are the only one in your family who eats a gluten free loaf, you’ll never get through an entire one before it starts to lose its freshness. However, I don’t think gluten free breads ever taste fresh anyway! I would much prefer to buy fresh gluten free bread everyday that literally only lasted a day or two max if it was healthier and had less fat in it!
Basically I just want to say a massive thank you and well done to Bfree. You have made my lunch times so much more
pleasurable and having a fajita dinner is a lovely bonus too. I really wish that cafes and restaurants would acknowledge the amazing taste and convenience of gluten free wraps for us intolerants and buy some in for their cafes. It would be amazing to not have to bring a Bfree wrap in a bag with me and instead my local café could just provide one. Who knows, maybe this is the next step!
For now however I will enjoy my Bfree wraps wherever I go & I highly recommend, if you haven’t already, to give some a try. You really won’t regret it! Please let me know if you have any tasty filling suggestions for the Bfree wraps, I’m always looking for new lunchtime ideas!
