Secret Sausages are deliciously different from any sausages I have tried before. Best of all they are Gluten Free, Dairy Free & Vegan.
So with November in full swing and an invitation to hang out with some moustached sausages from the folks at Vegetables in Disguise, I have to say November instantly turned into Movember in our house!
We were sent 3 different flavours of Secret Sausages (Garlic & Rosemary, Honey Bee and Chilli & Coriander) with the instruction to arrange a ‘Movember Dinner Party!’ – All the sausages are gluten free, dairy free and of course vegetarian!
This seemed a great idea as having only moved to Manchester a couple of months ago it seemed to be the perfect opportunity for a party in our new place! What made the idea even better is that for every guest that attended, Vegetables in Disguise / Secret Sausages were going to donate some money towards Movember. I have to say as a female I have never been able to engage in the growing of a moustache for Movember, so it was nice to think I could properly be involved this year and make a small difference!
When you think of a dinner party you often think of quite the formal occasion and that is what we did propose to do with a couple from down the road. A ‘Secret Sausages’ Toad in the Hole was firmly on the menu with a large dose of homely mash potato, veggies and gravy. All entirely gluten free and dairy free! However before you get excited about the forthcoming recipe and pictures I will cut to the chase… our dinner party guests pulled out due to sickness and we have had to rearrange for beyond November/Movember!
However this didn’t stop Mark and I having our own dinner party… by ourselves. These sausages needed a home and our stomachs seemed the best place!
It was a Saturday night and with the disappointment of our friends not being able to make it this time, we opted to scrap the more involved Toad in the Hole and formal dinner option for a night of easy tasty grub and X Factor.
And what could be tastier and easier than using our Secret Sausages to make hot dogs coated in ketchup and mustard?!
We got the grill on and threw under all of our Secret Sausages for around 10 minutes. They can be fried, oven baked or even BBQ’d but it seemed a little cold last night for that! Once they were all nicely cooked we placed a few into our gluten free baguettes and layered on the ketchup and mustard. Dinner was served in the best part of 15 minutes!
All the different flavours were great. I especially liked the kick the Chilli and Coriander ones had. They were spiced really well which brought out the vegetables more.
Mark was more partial to the Honey Bee Sausages, which were packed full of sweetcorn, carrots, peas, and honey! He has more of a sweet tooth and felt the honey was perfectly balanced to give a gentle subtle sweetness to the sausage.
I know the concept of literally vegetable sausages might seem weird to some of you, I know it did to me at first when I’m definitely not a vegetarian! However, I would definitely recommend giving them a try. They are unlike any other vegetarian sausage I have ever tasted. Many veggie sausages are filled with wheat/gluten or cheese, which is not great for us gluten and lactose intolerants. Also I have to say most vegetarian sausages I have tried in the past just scream bad quality, Secret Sausages are definitely in another category all together!
They aren’t called Vegetables in Disguise for no reason, the blend of vegetables and spices really puts a great spin on the standard vegetable, and, who doesn’t like a sausage?! I think Secret Sausages would be a great idea for those struggling to get their children to eat their veggies… I know when I was younger I was incredibly fussy… but I loved sausages!
For me, Secret Sausages definitely don’t replace the pork sausage, but I don’t think they are trying to replace it; it is an entirely different concept. We had a great ‘Dinner Party’ thanks to these and hopefully raised a little money in the process for Movember.
Let me know if you’ve tried them or if you have tried any other great alternative gluten free sausages. I am always on the look out for different ones to try!
