There’s nothing like seeing the mortified face of a loved one as you kindly brew them a lovely cuppa tea, then reach for the goat’s milk. But here’s four highly convincing reasons to try goat’s milk – some of which are so convincing that you may wish to make the switch in the long-term.
1. It’s lower in lactose than cow’s milk.
As a lactose intolerant, I was surprised to have no issues with goat’s milk whatsoever. Goat’s milk contains less lactose and is almost like nature’s godsend for those of us who cannot consume traditional dairy products. Though it isn’t completely free from lactose, the fact that it’s much easier on the digestive system to boot means that goat’s milk is a great alternative for allergy sufferers.
2. It contains prebiotics.
Goat’s milk has properties similar to human milk in some instances, namely in the amount of oligosaccharides (we can only assume that this is goat-speak for prebiotics) which naturally occur. These act as prebiotics in the gut, assisting in the healthy maintenance of the intestinal tract whilst simultaneously safeguarding against harmful bacteria. Gaining natural prebiotics is also something incredibly rare for lactose intolerants too, so make the most of it 🙂
3. It can help in the alleviation of skin conditions such as eczema.
If you’re plagued by long-term skin conditions, then a switch to goat’s milk may be worth a try; goat’s milk has less naturally occurring allergenic properties than cow’s milk across the board. Apart from being safer for lactose intolerants, goat’s milk is also well known for the alleviation of eczema and other long-term skin conditions. It’s thought that the protein in cow’s milk known as S1-casein (which goat’s milk naturally has less of) is largely to blame and many never look back after making the switch.
4. It tastes great!
Despite the benefits that I’ve already listed here, the mere thought of drinking milk from a goat was enough to put me off for several years. However, once I got over that thought, I’ve enjoyed it with my cereal every morning since. The taste is actually very similar to cow’s milk and you’d struggle to tell the difference when put under close scrutiny.
Give it a try and let us know what you thought!
