In a recall posted last week by the Food Standards Agency (15th October 2025), Tesco have recalled a product in their free from range as it now contains wheat (gluten) not mentioned on the label.
According to the post on the Food Standards Agency website: “This product contains wheat (gluten) making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease.”

Which products are affected by the product recall?
The specific product affected is:
- Tesco Free From Breadcrumbs 170g
See the photo below to see an image of the affected product and tap it to see the relevant product on Tesco’s website.
Please tell as many people as you can as this could affect a lot of people. I only saw the ‘new’ label for gluten-free breadcrumbs in Tesco earlier today, with this product having been out of stock for a long, long time prior.
I really hope this hasn’t caught anyone out – lets get the word out to as many people as possible before it does. This really is a concerning recall, especially as it’s a product from the ‘free from range’. Trust is hugely important within the gluten free community. The recalled product in question: Tesco Free From Breadcrumbs 170g

Are any other Tesco free from products affected? (UPDATE!)
I asked a member of head office the question ‘have any other products been affected?’ as lots of you have been worried about this. And I finally got a response!
Their response: “It is only this one item that has been recalled so no other breaded items are included in this recall.”
Of course this recall is incredibly concerning as I said the other day on social media, totally unacceptable. But I just wanted to put this information out there to hopefully reassure people that it doesn’t affect products like free from breaded chicken, fish and/or gluten free stuffing (a few of the things I’ve seen questioned over the past 5 days).
The member of head office also said to me: “We take these very seriously and will be reviewing processes to ensure this type of incident does not happen again.”
Lets hope this is the case as its incredibly serious and it can’t just keep happening.
What is a product recall?
According to the Food Standards Agency: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product). Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
In this case, the product in question is being recalled by Tesco.
How do I know if my packet of Tesco Free From breadcrumbs is affected?
Any pack of Tesco Free From breadcrumbs with dates up to and including Best Before End January 2027 is NOT safe to eat.

I thought this product was gluten-free? What happened?
This product has been out of stock and/or unreliably stocked in Tesco for well over a year. It was only recently I saw them appear with a ‘new’ label but no stock on shelves yet… (label shown in image below) then this happened.
Given that this product has been out of stock for such a long time, there has likely been some logistical/manufacturing changes that explain its absence and the error that led to the recall. However no further info has been provided at this time.

What should I do next if I have this product in my cupboard at home?
According to the Food Standards Agency: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or coeliac disease do not eat it.”
“Instead, return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required. For more information contact Tesco Customer Services at tesco.com/help/contact”
What are Tesco doing to address this issue?
As explained on the Food Standards Agency website, Tesco is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. You may have seen them resharing this info online already.
The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. This recall notice is shown above in this post.
I’ve already opened it – can I still return it?
If you still have the packaging with the affected date, I would recommend taking it and as much of the product as possible to Tesco customer services.
Where can I read the official Food Standards Agency post about this specific recall?
You can find it by tapping here. You can find Tesco’s own recall notice by tapping here.
Please let as many gluten-free people know about this as possible!
As it’s often difficult to reach everyone who may have purchased these affected products, please share this news with as many gluten-free people as possible.
What are your thoughts? Are you affected by this recall? Please let me know!
