Gluten free salt and pepper chips recipe – just like what you’d order from the Chinese takeaway! This recipe is vegan and low FODMAP too.
Gluten free salt and pepper chips recipe, anyone? They’re peppery, a little spicy and a super side alongside your gluten free Chinese fakeaway favourites.
So it turns out that a lot of you guys missed eating salt and pepper chips from the Chinese takeaway like I did!
Whilst there isn’t exactly any gluten in this recipe to start with – 99.9% of Chinese takeaways never have a separate fryer. So we can’t even safely eat the chips to begin with!
But you can make them at home incredibly easily. And best of all, there’s no fryer required.
Yep, that’s right, I’ve managed to make nice, fat and chunky chip shop-style chips without deep-frying a single thing. Here’s how…
Well, it’s simple really! It just involves parboiling your chips first, THEN roasting them in the oven with a little oil. It really couldn’t be simpler.
You’ll then get that lovely crispy exterior and fluffy middle. So this is sort of like two of my ultimate takeaway favourites combined: chip shop chips with Chinese salt and pepper seasoning!
Of course, if you want a cheeky little hack, you can actually use this seasoning mix on frozen oven chips too ?
But obviously, give it a try my way first as I promise you will not be disappointed! Here’s your shopping list for this recipe ??
Gluten free salt and pepper chips recipe: Ingredients
- 1kg of potatoes
- oil
For the seasoning:
- ½ tsp five spice
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
- ½ tsp salt
Gluten free salt and pepper chips recipe: Method
Preheat your oven to 220C (a little hotter wouldn’t hurt if yours goes higher!)
Peel your potatoes. Cut them into even chunky sticks (basically how you cut them is up to you but I’m thinking chunky chip shop chips, so don’t make them thin!)
Place the chips into boiling water on the hob for around 3 minutes, then remove and drain.
Put all your blanched chips onto a large baking tray, coating them in oil. Make sure they are well coated in oil so they don’t stick.
Place in the oven for around 15 minutes. Monitor your chips so they don’t get too brown on any side. I like a turn them over once or twice during cooking time. Cook until lightly browned, cooked through and crisp on the outside, but fluffy within.
Mix up your spice mix. Gently sprinkle half of it all over the chips, be careful not to let it let it fall onto the chips in big clumps.
Give the chips a good turn/mix in all the seasoning and repeat with the rest of the seasoning. Enjoy!
Oh and here’s a more condensed, printer-friendly version of the recipe. Please leave a 5 star rating if it turned out well as it helps encourage others to give it a try! ??
