If you have followed my social media channels over the past month or so, you will know that I have been having a few health struggles beyond just my stomach (I’d imagine everyone on the planet knows how bad my frickin’ digestive system is, so I won’t go into that today).
Besides said digestive issues, I am someone who feels pretty good every single day. However, towards the end of this year I’ve just been feeling a bit… pants.
I thought today I’d go through a few of my symptoms to see if anyone is feeling similar or whether anyone has any general tips from their own experiences.
I like to talk about my health like this from my own perspective because, whilst going to the doctors and getting help from a professional is really the most important thing, it is also nice to feel like you are not alone. It’s nice to talk about trivial things with others who understand and might be going through similar things. That’s something the internet really is great for.
1) Aching legs
So for starters the biggest and baddest issue for me has been my aches and pains. 99% of the pain is in my legs and they just constantly ache. I still remember getting aching legs as a child if my parents took me for a day out and I was walking constantly all day. However, my aching legs occur whether I’ve walked lots or not even moved.
They are always bad, especially when I sit down for a longer period of time. For instance, when I was at a restaurant the other day, I couldn’t wait to get up to stretch my legs out. In the evenings when I’m watching TV, the pain is just silly, I can never get all cosy! Anyone else feel like that?
Another symptom that drives me crazy (or rather, makes me want to do absolutely nothing) is the fact I am constantly tired. So many times recently I have said to Mark, ‘I could lay on the floor right here and go to sleep’ (when we are in the middle of a supermarket!)
I believe this is what we all know as fatigue and I have definitely never experienced anything like it before. I get more than enough sleep each night these days but never wake up feeling refreshed. Oh, and after eating anything I feel like I need to crawl up under a blanket and take a nap! (the only people I have ever known that have done this were my grandparents… I’m only 26!)
Being fatigued has really put a lot of strain on my job. I work for myself and am a very self motivated individual, but my god, fatigue has been viciously attempting to remove all my self motivation. I haven’t let it win thank goodness, but I mean, even as I’m typing this I could just put my head down and snooze.
Another issue for me has been migraines. 2017 is the first year I have ever struggled with migraines and I hope it’s the last too! I know my mum used to suffer with them so I don’t know if that’s got something to do with it, but seriously – they are horrible.
I’m not sick like some people are but my head is just pounding and I feel like I might be sick. Any light makes it worse and it almost makes me feel a little dizzy. Fortunately I don’t get them too regularly, but when I do they last a couple of days. I’m not entirely sure why I get them or if they relate to my other symptoms though.
4) My knuckles
Bit of a weird one here, but on a couple of my fingers (on the joints nearest the hand) I get these not too noticeable red lumps. Now the lumps don’t stick out much but if I happen to knock them they absolutely kill. So, so painful!
They’re not itchy, and don’t hurt if I don’t knock them, but they just won’t go away! Now this is definitely something that might have nothing to do with everything else however, they aren’t normal for my hands and they are very annoying! I also have a couple on my toes, again that aren’t painful…. any ideas?!
5) Irregular Periods
Yes, I know this is just normal for some people and can be due to a range of different things, but recently this has got really bad for me. I’ve always had a body that works like clockwork when it comes to my time of the month, but not anymore. Suddenly it’s starting a week earlier… and then going on for 14 days instead of my once 5-7 days. It’s just so frustrating that it comes about so unexpectedly!
What the doctors have said…
Of course with all these problems I opted after a couple of months of struggling to go and see my GP. I must admit that I wasn’t hopeful. Whenever I go to the GP about my stomach I always hear the same old things… but the doctor I saw was really understanding. She did a few tests and also booked me in for bloods and an ultra sound scan on my pelvis.
I’ve got the ultra sound in January and I had my bloods done the next day (just before Christmas). I’ve now got my blood test results and it has come back that I am extremely deficient in vitamin D. I have been placed on medication for the next 6 weeks to hopefully correct this as well as on calcium tablets. I’m really hoping this will solve my problems! I will keep you all updated on that.
Anyway that was my brief update of my health towards the end of 2017. I have taken one of my vitamin D tablets so far. They are very high strength but obviously I’ve yet to see a difference… early days I guess!
I’m not sure if this is useful or an interesting read for anyone but I’ve decided that I just want to post a few more things like this to just talk to you guys about my health and hear from you too.
Please feel free to drop a comment below or on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram letting me know if you have (or have had) similar symptoms and how you are feeling? I love to chatter with you guys, it’s my favourite.
Have a lovely new year & speak soon,
Thanks for reading,
