My January Favourites 2017

So it’s nearing the end of January… what?! I cannot believe we are a twelfth of the way through the year! 2017 has definitely started really well for me so I thought I would share a few things that have made me happy this month in my January favourites 2017 video.

My Birthday in Brighton!

Had such a great birthday in Brighton – my favourite place in the UK, if not the world. I will move here permanently one day… loads of gluten free food, great shopping, huge seagulls and I even got my ear pierced a couple of times more. Oh and we stayed in an amazing Airbnb apartment which we may have already booked again for February shh!!

Cookbooks – Deliciously Ella with Friends & Leon: Fast & Free

january favourites 2017

Picked up both of these cookbooks the other day. Both are entirely gluten free and dairy free, so perfect for me and Mark. Both have amazing photography which makes my mouth water, I am very excited to get cooking some new dishes from both of these books! Has anyone else bought any good cookbooks recently?

Wheat Free Bakery – gluten free bread

I have mentioned this quite a few times across my social channels since I put my first order in before Christmas. Oh my, it is seriously the most amazing place to buy gluten free bread. Your view of eating gluten free bread will change forever once you have eaten Wheat Free Bakery bread. I plan to do one big order a month (saves on delivery costs) and freeze plenty for the month. It is seriously the one of my top recommendations for those who need to eat gluten free. They also do lots of gluten free cakes, doughnuts and buns.

Apple Watch

january favourites 2017

I bought this for myself as a birthday present to myself. I never really considered getting an Apple Watch till recently but it is so good… I love it. I don’t need to take my phone around with my everywhere as it notifies me of texts and calls etc and pretty much everything my phone does. Plus the activity app and heart monitor is great too. Highly recommended… I do love Apple products a lot.. I admit it!

Joining the gym

I’ve started going to the gym for the first time since April 2014. I literally have been off exercise since then so the thought of getting back into it was both exciting and scary. Me and Mark decided it was time to get a gym membership once again and we are loving it. We have only been a few times but are really enjoying it. I want to build my strength up and go to a few classes in the future, spinning looks fun! Oh & I would love to become more flexible… any advice let me know!!

TV: Westworld

January is cold and we definitely spend a lot of evenings snuggled up on the sofa watching TV. Fortunately Mark & I have discovered a great new series called Westworld. A few people I work with watched it at the end of last year and recommended it, and I’m so glad we gave it a go. Westworld is a western style theme park for people to visit to live out fantasies and engage in storylines. It might sound weird, but it’s seriously cool. I would definitely recommend it!

Home bits from HomeSense

january favourites 2017

This month whilst we were in Brighton we picked up a few purchases from Homesense for our forthcoming bathroom project. We have two bathrooms upstairs in our house that need to be redecorated at some point so we bought a couple of really cool items in preparation! I don’t think we will get round to doing them for a little while but it is good to be prepared! Homesense is seriously really cool, I’ve barely ever been in one, but you can get some really nice homeware items at really good prices in there.

there you have it, my January Favourites, my first favourites of 2017! It’s been a great month with my birthday and our trip to Brighton. I know for lots of people January is not the best of months for them but I’m sure everyone has a few things that have made them smile this month, let me know by leaving a comment below or on Facebook/Twitter.

What I Got For Christmas / December Favourites 2016

Hello everyone and welcome to 2017! One of my favourite posts to read just after Christmas is a ‘What I Got For Christmas’ post so I thought I would create a video all about what I got for Christmas in replacement of this month’s favourites video! Below I also thought I would give a little overview to my festive period. I would love to know how you got on, in general and also in terms of coping with gluten free / IBS etc!

I haven’t written a blog post since before Christmas… so HAPPY CHRISTMAS (for a week ago!) & also Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and you are all looking forward to a positive and productive 2017 – I sure am!

My Christmas Day was spent at my parents house with lots of family, it was lovely and idilic. We had a big turkey for Christmas lunch alongside all the trimmings – I always love a good roast, especially when every single aspect of it is gluten free, result!
We followed this with a refreshing early evening walk down into the village that I grew up in with the dogs. The day couldn’t have been more perfect really. We had a present ‘giving & receiving’ session in the afternoon which as always makes me incredibly grateful and happy – I know it’s cliche, but I really do love giving others gifts & seeing their happy faces!

Later in the evening Mark & I headed over to see Mark’s family which again is always a really nice occasion. Mark has two younger nephews and I always like to see what they get for Christmas… their presents are much more fun than anything you get as an adult! We also exchanged presents here which once again was lovely and made for a perfect end to the 25th of December.

How was your Christmas Day? I hope you received everything that you were hoping for (& more!). I certainly did as you can see above or if you like, click here to watch the full video on YouTube.

what i got for christmas

Since Christmas Day, Mark & I have had a really relaxing week which has involved absolutely no work, lots of delicious (gluten free) food & endless smiles + good times!

On 30th December we invited 8 members of my family round for a early new years dinner party! Cooking for 10 people was something that we have never even attempted to do before but it turned out really well. Mark & I are a little crazy when it comes to cooking, we never like to make it easy for ourselves… we decided to make an entire Chinese takeaway style meal for 10, all from scratch!
Hours of cooking led to a really well received dinner! Some of the dishes that went down really well included my gluten free Chinese chicken curry, gluten free satay, gluten free beef in black bean sauce & of course the duck! It was an incredibly tiring occasion but I can’t wait to organise our next one, it was so much fun – I felt like a proper party planner + everyone loved the gluten free Chinese feast we served up!

Anyway, I’ll leave this post here as I hope you are enjoying my ‘What I Got For Christmas 2016’ video more than all this waffle. Please feel free to leave a comment below or on the video itself. (Or on Facebook/Twitter!)
2016 has been a beautiful year for me & I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who reads my blog and/or watches my videos. I’ve enjoyed every minute of the year and I cannot wait to see what 2017 brings! I do have some resolutions but I think I’m still too drained from our dinner party to remember them right now! I’ll be sure to let you know what they are at some point!

August Favourites 2016 – feat. Gluten Free Gnocchi & The Great British Bake Off!

It’s August Favourites time! What have you been loving this month?!

The Great British Bake Off

august favourites

Pretty sure this will be a lot of people’s favourites in August (& into September), who doesn’t love the GBBO?! It feels like it’s a programme that brings everyone together. For some reason even those who don’t like baking all that much seem to enjoy it! I guess you are literally just watching cakes, pies, tarts & biscuits be made before your very eyes… mouth-watering yes.
Anyway, it always motivates me to get my bake on! So I definitely will be very soon. For now we are like 80% there with our new kitchen so give it a few more weeks and I will be properly on it with the baking! Another thing, part of my new kitchen is inspired by The Great British Bake Off… I have my very own ‘slide and hide’ oven! It’s amazing. I cannot wait to use it; it looks and feels awesome!

Gluten Free Gnocchi

august favourites

So Mark & I have never had gnocchi before the other week. We’ve obviously seen it lots but never thought to try it ourselves really. I couldn’t really be bothered to make my own on first attempt, as I don’t even know what the taste & texture is supposed to be like. Fortunately our local Tesco has increased it’s free from aisle massively & one of the new things they stock is gluten free gnocchi! We’ve had it a couple of times in August & we really do love it!
We’ve been making gnocchi bakes, as a sort of ‘meat free Monday’ dish. Just cooking up some sliced baby courgettes, lightly frying them before adding homemade pasta sauce, the gnocchi & lots of seasoning (chives is the greatest herb in the world by the way). Then we put the mix in an oven proof dish with lots of dairy free cheese and bake it for about 10 minutes till the cheese is bubbly and golden – it’s delicious! Would love to hear some different ways to use gluten free gnocchi if anyone has any ideas!

So, I’m sitting here writing this and I thought I’d put on some music to keep me company. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with or remember the band Milburn? Well, I love them and I’m listening to their album ‘Well Well Well’. It’s from 2006, so 10 years old, but it’s amazing. When the likes of the Arctic Monkeys etc. were coming through Milburn were right up there too. If you haven’t given them a listen before… you should. They aren’t together anymore but they have loads of tunes that if you have a similar taste in music to me, you’ll love.

I’ve noticed that August might be the best time ever to buy stationary if you are a stationary lover like me. Children are buying their new pencil cases etc for the new term. It used to be my favourite time of year… taking a basket around WHSmith, buying rulers, rubbers, pencil sharpeners, smelly gen pens & the all important pencil case for school! Now it’s just a really great time to pick up new bits and bobs that I kind of need… but don’t really need & everything is on offer. I bought a massive pack of sharpies the other day, & I’m pretty sure a few notepads are going to be purchased before the month is over too!

I heard The Great British Bake Off was delayed a few weeks because of the Olympics. If I’m honest I was completely happy with this. Another one of my favourites this month was definitely the Olympics. I’ve always been a really sporty person, watching & playing… although I haven’t played sport in a few years now (the reason for this is another massive story in itself). Anyway, I love the Olympics for watching sports that I generally only get to watch once every four years. For me I keep away from the sports I watch regularly… football & tennis. Instead, gymnastics, thaequando, basketball, swimming, diving & triathlon are right up there. Even the synchronised swimming is amazing. It was nice to get behind Team GB

House Update

august favourites

So it seems like ages ago that we got the keys to our new house. In August we sadly haven’t moved in BUT… we are SO close! We have been redoing the kitchen and it is very nearly complete. We have definitely got some projects over the next few years with bathrooms & the garden but it’s the most amazing little place just because… it’s Mark & I’s first house together with a garden. We’ve lived in flats together for a while now, but now we’re in our first house eeek!

House Accessories

august favourites

So of course with the new house, we need to buy some new bits and pieces to make it our own. We currently don’t have any sofas but we’ve been buying the odd few things when we see them. We went to Laura Ashley the other day to look at their homeware & came away with 2 animal related (not intentional) but awesome things. A mallard duck doorstop & some handles with different dog breeds on them. I don’t know where we are going to use them yet, but I love dogs and these were really sweet so I just had to buy them! We need some advice on homeware, is there anywhere you would recommend? I’m a massive Oliver Bonas fan, so I will definitely be saving my pennies for some bits from there!

august favourites

Seeing as this will be my final month in the flat we are currently living in, I think my ultimate favourite of the month needs to go to what I’m going to miss the most about moving…. LEO! Leo is a beautiful little black & white cat that lives in the flat below us… but really he lives with us. I’ve never been a cat lover, I’m all about dogs, but Leo has changed my view on cats. He loves nothing more than sleeping on my lap in the evenings and I actually can’t imagine life without him. I hope he’ll be ok without us. I hope the new people in this flat look after him… we won’t be far away so I think we’ll pop back to check up on him!

There you have it, my August Favourites are complete! One of the best months of the year is all done & dusted! We didn’t quite move into our new house this month, but I’ve had a blast. It’s been a busy one for me but the sunshine always puts a smile on my face! I’m looking forward to September, it’s usually a nice month weather wise and of course, The Great British Bake Off continues… hopefully some tasty free from bakes will make an appearance!

Let me know how your August has been. What was your favourite gluten free foodie product/location? Have you been on holiday anywhere nice? Just let me know about everything you’ve been loving & what you are looking forward to next month too! Drop a comment below, or on Facebook/Twitter.
